Embracing Excellence beyond the Highs and Lows
The journey from being good to great is long and hard, but one that is worth undertaking. It requires embracing a spirit of excellence and being in the pursuit of constantly becoming better. This is no more evident than in the world of sports, where players are always striving to improve their skills. Excellence is less of a matter of talent then. It is, in fact, a by-product of the 4 P’s-one passion, practice, perseverance and patience. It is both a path as well as a destination.
Every excellent sportsperson in the world has been a beginner at one point, has made mistakes and has, without exception, failed I write this to remind all of you, my dear readers, that being excellent is not a forte restricted to few. Each of us has a choice to make. We can either succumb to our weaknesses or quit, or we can believe in ourselves, and see our mistakes and failure as opportunities to grow.
The spirit of excellence goes beyond winning or losing. It is about nurturing the values and qualities that make one not just a great athlete but also a remarkable human being, It is visible in the habits we develop and the choices that we make daily. Arrogance can impede our progress by fooling us into believing in our own sense of false superiority. In sports, records are regularly achieved and beaten, but what lasts in public memory, is one’s performance, both on-field and off-field.
Sports can teach us how to imbibe and foster the spirit of excellence. Dear students your do not need to always outshine others to be deemed as excellent, but what you must strive for, is giving your personal best. Respect your opponents and reflect on what you can learn from them. Seek to collaborate and work in teams as it will help you in becoming comfortable with differences and put up a united front. Stay humble in victories and gracious in losses. Always uphold strong ethical values and integrity. As you improve and become better, help others do the same. Excellence is a lifelong pursuit. You are already winning if you are seeking to continuously improve.

Dear readers, life will inevitably present us with wins and losses. What matters most is how we live and learn through it all. While rewards are a good measure of excellence, our response is a better one. Make sure you respond with the determination to never be defeated and a yearning to constantly learn.
